Thank you to all who attended the 2018 Champions of Adult Literacy fundraiser, benefiting the Delaware County Literacy Council (DCLC)!
An Exciting Evening for a Good Cause
The Sixth Annual “Champions of Adult Literacy” Fundraiser was held on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Harrah’s Philadelphia Racetrack & Casino in Chester.
DCLC’s annual Champions of Adult Literacy event honors community members who champion literacy and who support the Literacy Council’s efforts to provide free services to adults who are improving their basic skills, preparing for their high school equivalency, or learning English as a Second Language.
Here are the inspiring Champions who were honored at this year’s event.
“Hometown Hero” Champion Dyana Williams
Dyana Williams is the 2018 “Hometown Hero” Champion of Adult Literacy.
Dyana Williams is an entertainment powerhouse: A music activist, celebrity strategist, broadcaster, and currently an on-air personality at 100.3 WRNB Radio One Philadelphia.
Dyana is passionate about literacy. She created the Literacy Lyric Project with GRAMMY-winning songwriters/producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to promote the importance of being able to read and write well in order to succeed in the entertainment industry. Also, she is a powerful role model to all who want to create positive change in their community.
Formerly president of the Philadelphia chapter of The Recording Academy (also known as the GRAMMY organization), Williams continues to serve on its board and on several national committees. She attended Temple University’s Klein School of Media and Communication, where she graduated cum laude. The daughter of a college professor, and an advocate for quality education, Williams currently sits on the Klein Board of Visitors.
Community Champion: Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union
The Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union (FMFCU) is the 2018 Community Champion of Adult Literacy.
FMFCU has supported the Literacy Council in a variety of ways. FMFCU employees have enthusiastically volunteered their time to serve on the Literacy Council’s Board of Directors and on board committees for many years. FMFCU also has been the lead sponsor of the Champions of Adult Literacy fundraising event since its inception in 2013. Recently, FMFCU donated office furniture that has helped DCLC grow and serve more adult students.
FMFCU has provided financial products and services to residents and organizations in the Greater Philadelphia Region and beyond since 1970. Through the FMFCU Partners in Education foundation, FMFCU coordinates the Delco Hi-Q high school academic competition, offers scholarships, and provides financial literacy outreach to all ages.
DCLC Student Champion: Kim Robinson
Kim Robinson is the 2018 DCLC Student Champion of Adult Literacy. Kim first came to the Literacy Council in 2010. Like many of the Literacy Council’s adult students, she wanted a fresh start. Also, like many DCLC students, she came with her own story and challenges.
Kim did not finish high school because she suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (a rare bleeding in the brain) at the age of 18. She was pregnant with her first child at the time.
After a long road of rehabilitation, Kim gathered enough courage to come to the Literacy Council and ask for help.
She attended classes, worked with tutors, and built up her confidence until she felt ready to take and pass her GED exams. She continued on to earn an associate’s degree and is currently in the final stages of earning her bachelor’s degree. Just as impressive, Kim now works as a student support specialist for the Literacy Council.
