EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Executive Director, Delaware County Literacy Council (FT)

Job Overview

Delaware County seeks an Executive Director to serve as its chief executive, position to commence immediately.

Delaware County Literacy Council (DCLC) was formed in 1975 by a coalition of volunteers concerned about the number of people in the community who were unable to read and write English at levels which would allow them to gain employment.  DCLC was launched with volunteer tutors, who remain a large and critical component of the DCLC. Additionally, a professional staff serves as teachers and supporters of the student experience.

Recent evolution of the organization includes additional programs to support student employment and other skills necessary to for students to thrive and achieve their personal goals. DCLC is a leader in creating a community of lifelong learners within Delaware County. It is recognized as the “go to” resource for adult literacy training in Delaware and surrounding counties, and is sought after as a community partner.

The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive of Delaware County Literacy Council. The Executive Director is responsible for leading all aspects of the organization, including strategic planning and execution, fundraising, financial and general administration, programs, communications and community outreach, The Executive Director also serves as the Program Administrator for Pennsylvania Department of Education (“PDE”) programs.

Along with relevant experience, a successful ED will be nimble, have exemplary interpersonal skills, a transparent communication style and demonstrated ability to navigate change with positive energy. 

Responsibilities and Duties

• Serve as a visible and vocal advocate for the organization and our students

• Partner with the Board to fulfill the organization’s mission and execute its strategic plan, including commitment to reducing barriers to success and promoting equity in our communities

• Secure resources necessary to ensure the financial health and growth of the organization

• Attract, retain, develop and lead employees and volunteers of the organization in executing and supporting the fulfillment of the organization’s programs and community engagement

• Ensure commitment to an inclusive work environment and effective workplace

Requirements

  • Minimum education level–Bachelor’s degree
  • 10 or more years work experience, including 5 or more years nonprofit leadership experience
  • Strong internal and external communication skills
  • Demonstrated fundraising expertise with individuals and foundations
  • Experience overseeing operational and administrative functions, including financial management, facilities, technology and human resources
  • Experience with government grant programs
  • Demonstrated agile leadership skills and a growth mindset

Executive Director Experience

Knowledge of adult education and literacy

Involvement with professional associations

Experience with PDE grants

Director of Development/Marketing

Position Overview

The role of the Director of Development/Marketing is to engage our stakeholders in DCLC’s mission and vision, utilizing the established CRM software and procedures to maintain accurate constituent and donation information that will inform fundraising, marketing, and programming decisions in the organization. Utilize digital platforms and tools, such as online forms and email marketing software, to maintain the organization’s flow of communication with its constituents.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop a calendar of development activities and volunteer and staff participation required for each action
  • Oversee writing, editing, and mailing of winter appeal and spring appeal
  • Write and distribute at least six press releases per year that promote the organization and its activities. Maintain good relations with press contacts. Publicize other organizational activities as needed via social media, print, radio media
  • Work with IT and Program Teams (Student Support, Volunteer Tutor Teams, etc.) to ensure that all information on website, online forms and social media outlets is up-to-date, consistent and effectively communicating the DCLC mission
  • Work with IT to create an updated development website, including options for annual, major and planned giving donations
  • Work with Development Committee to lead the planning and implementation of the annual fall fundraiser and coordinate all logistics, including publicity
  • Work with Development Committee to lead the creation, planning and implementation of an annual spring fundraiser, and coordinate all logistics, including publicity
  • Establish legacy society (1975 Providence Society) and planned giving program
  • Coordinate an annual donor appreciation event to cultivate donor engagement.
  • Provide reports on the status of fundraising efforts for each Board Meeting
  • Identify new grant opportunities and write at least three grant applications per year
  • Have responsibility for assisting Executive Director with grant applications
  • Enter all donations (checks, online donations, gifts in kind, grants, ACH donations) into CRM software and generate acknowledgments letters for all donations (i.e., Eleo, DonorPerfect, eTapestry, Raiser’s Edge, etc.) and an integrated email marketing software, such as Constant Contact or MailChimp
  • Oversee and supervise accessing online payment websites to generate documentation for third-party donations, such as United Way and employee payroll deduction donations.
  • Annually review all print and online communication materials for consistency, accuracy, and effectiveness
  • Monitor analytics and industry trends to inform strategy
  • Other duties and assignments as needed, and assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and three years of experience in communications and development
  • Ability to manage and follow-through on multiple tasks in a timely manner, work in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills and attention to detail to supervise accurate data reporting and data entry
  • Experience using Facebook, YouTube; LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, email marketing, Hootsuite, and other emerging marketing tools; knowledge of Microsoft Teams and Zoom for communication purposes
  • Extensive experience with a nonprofit CRM database. Proficient in MS Office programs.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Ability to supervise appropriate volunteers to complete development and communications assignments
